Dissertation Directory

The Dissertation is the final module for those students completing either a BA(Hons) or MA programme, and takes the form of a researched report on a subject that is negotiated by each student. The starting point for this module is the research proposal, which must be agreed by the University before research can commence. The research proposal will have been developed within the mandatory module, Research Methodology, but must nevertheless be submitted for approval before the student enrols onto the Dissertation module. The submitted proposal may, or may not, be identical to the one which formed part of the assignment for Research Methodology.

Once the proposal has been approved, and enrolment completed, there is a fixed period within which the research and writing must be completed. Most dissertations are operated as a double module and generally take two semesters to complete. Students who are engaged in research for the Dissertation are expected to work independently, although with the support of their designated Supervisor. They will also be expected to attend a Research Seminar with other students, once or twice, within their period of study. Work on the Dissertation module can only begin at the start of a new semester.

Students who already have sufficient credit, or expect to have once work has gone through an imminent Assessment Panel, are urged to make contact with the centre, to discuss their proposal. ‘Sufficient credit’ means 120 credits for MA.

The Dissertation is worth 60 credits towards the MA programme.
