Research Library at Belstead House

Students who are working towards an MA (Hons) in Education should be aware of the opportunities for carrying out research at Belstead House. The Centre has a small research library, which supports the work of the various modules that are on offer at any one time. The set texts and other supportive literature for any module should be available for study. The scope of the library is not extensive, but will usually support preliminary research within Education. The collection of books related to Education Management is particularly useful. There are approximately 200 dissertations by previous students, and these are all held in the research library, and are available for study purposes on a reference only basis. Consideration of research by other teachers (usually Suffolk teachers) is often a good starting point for a new research project.

Texts that support the work of current modules may be borrowed for one week only, on the assumption that other students may also wish to access the same material. Other references may be borrowed for a two-week period. Students are welcome to use the library as a place to study.

When not in use for teaching and meetings, the research library may be available for study during the day (9.00 – 5.00), however students are strongly urged to check that the library will be available beforehand by ‘phoning 01473 690947.

As well as issuing books for loan, I would be pleased to offer academic advice about work in progress. This would include suggesting avenues for research and advising on aspects of academic writing eg, referencing, compiling a bibliography and the correct layout for a dissertation or assignment. I would also be pleased to discuss course planning and the availability of modules.

In addition to this research facility at Belstead House, all students are entitled to use the Anglia Ruskin library facilities at Chelmsford and Cambridge. Details of the University library provision can be found at http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk . The University can provide on-line access to an enormous amount of research material, but to gain full access to that provision, students must have a student card and an ATHENS password. To obtain a student card you should send a passport type photograph to Janice Parish, the Centre Administrator. Once the card has been received, it is possible to gain ATHENS access by registering at http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk/distance/distance.htm
